Nexø: Bornholm’s creative spirit and hometown of the island’s greatest son

Bornholm was put on the world cinematic map in 1987 when the film Pelle the Conqueror premiered in cinemas and went on to become a worldwide success.

Bille August’s film starring Max von Sydow and Pelle Hvenegaard is based on the series of novels written by Martin Andersen Nexø, who grew up on Bornholm.

The creative spirit is very much alive and well in Nexø – so much so, in fact, that it is also home to Bornholm’s entrepreneurial centre, which has become a hub of entrepreneurship, creativity and sustainable projects.

International centre for glass art

Much of the town’s creativity can be experienced in the Royal Academy’s Glass and Ceramics Workshop, based in the heart of Nexø. The town’s Glass and Ceramics School was established in 1997, and in 2010 it merged with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation.

The location of the educational institution is in itself proof that Bornholm is to be considered an international centre for glass art and ceramic craftsmanship.
