Bornholm was put on the world cinematic map in 1987 when the film Pelle the Conqueror premiered in cinemas and went on to become a worldwide success.
Bille August’s film starring Max von Sydow and Pelle Hvenegaard is based on the series of novels written by Martin Andersen Nexø, who grew up on Bornholm.
The creative spirit is very much alive and well in Nexø – so much so, in fact, that it is also home to Bornholm’s entrepreneurial centre, which has become a hub of entrepreneurship, creativity and sustainable projects.
Much of the town’s creativity can be experienced in the Royal Academy’s Glass and Ceramics Workshop, based in the heart of Nexø. The town’s Glass and Ceramics School was established in 1997, and in 2010 it merged with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation.
The location of the educational institution is in itself proof that Bornholm is to be considered an international centre for glass art and ceramic craftsmanship.
Once a major fishing port, Nexø Harbour is now a creative powerhouse with ever-changing activities taking place in the industrial harbour buildings.
Here you’ll find the Nexø Sand Sculpture Park, Nexø Railway Museum and, not least, Værftet – an indoor playground, skate park and café.
Balka Strand lies just south of Nexø and is one of Bornholm’s most popular beaches with its chalk-white sand and shallow waters.
At Nexø harbour, you have the chance to spend your holiday on a cosy houseboat – great sea views guaranteed! However, if you prefer solid ground under your feet, Nexø has plenty of other great places to stay, from hostels and camping to holiday apartments, holiday homes, Bed & Breakfasts and Hotels. Just pack your suitcase and go.
Another favourite is author Martin Andersen Nexø’s House, which was his childhood home from 1882 to 1884.
The Memorial Rooms house a collection of portrait paintings, photographs and personal items from Martin Andersen Nexø’s life and work.
You can even take a walk in the author’s footsteps on a 6.6-kilometre long poetry route, brought to life with audio narration and anecdotes.
