Bicycle route: Children’s Route, stage 1 – Rønne to Gudhjem

First stage of the Children's Route around Bornholm. From Rønne to Gudhjem along old railway tracks among round churches, rock crevices and cave spiders

Facts about the route

Length: 30 km
Surface: asphalt and gravel road

Route description

From Rønne, follow the bicycle path along the old railway track until you reach Nyker, home to Bornholm’s smallest round church, Ny Kirke. From Nyker, the route goes slightly upwards until it enters the large nature area Spellinge Mose along what some have called Denmark’s most beautiful bicycle path. The route runs at the bottom of a lush rift valley under steep rock walls.

Continue to the coast, where you come to Bornholm’s Art Museum and the dramatically towering Helligdomsklipper with steep access stairs, deep rock crevices and large cave spiders.

The tour ends in Gudhjem with caramels, ice cream and everything good for the palate.

Places on the route

1

Ny Kirke

Nyker Rundkirke is considered to be the smallest and youngest of Bornholm's four round churches. Nyker Rundkirke is also the church that bears the least sign of having been a defensive structure. Read more here.

2

Spellinge Mose

Close to the ridge where the old refuge fortress Storeborg was located, you will find a wetland. It is Spellinge Mose, or Spællinge Mose. Peat was previously dug here. Read more here.

3

Helligdomsklipperne

Throughout millennia, the waves at this location has eroded the rocky coast and created deep gorges into the mountain. What remains now are the sharp cliffs, jagged granite pillars and steep rock walls with deep passages and caves – so-called “ovens”, which together make up the Helligdomsklipperne (Holy Cliffs). Read more here.

4

Gudhjem

Gudhjem with its many smokehouse chimneys is Denmark’s only mountain town and a small ferry sails from the harbour to Christiansø. Read more here.
