Bicycle route: Country road, Gudhjem and surroundings

Magnus Cort recommends lots of elevation gain! The trip for those who like it to go uphill. The route starts and ends at Denmark's largest waterfall with lots of elevation gain in between.

Facts about the route

Length: 56.8 km
Surface: Asphalt
Altitude difference: ↑ 611 ↓ 590

Route description

The start of the route in Døndalen offers 100 hm up to Rø, before you hit a flat stretch again. And that actually describes the trip very well, which offers densely packed altitude gain.

From Rø, continue left along Røbrovej, where you meet “Bobbebrøddan”, which offers, among other things, 30 altitude meters over just 300 m. Once you have reached the top, the road goes down to Gudhjem Harbour via the steep main street. From here, you are free to choose whether to go up via Bokulvej, which is the shortest, but also the steepest distance; Brøddegade, which is not as steep, more even and a little longer; or the last option, which is Nørresand, the longest road, but with the most manageable gradients.

From the top of the hill, you head east along Helligdomsvej, where after about 4 km you take two short turns up to land and back down again. First it is Kobbevej and then Kjeldsebyvej that is the turn. After the top of Kjeldsebyvej, the rest of the trip continues inland. Keep right on Nybrovej, drive through Østerlars and a short turn around Rø Plantage and so on along a really nice road between Rø and Olsker. Just before Olsker you drive down to Tejn along the coast and back to the bottom of Døndalen.
