Administration
Per 1 January 2003, the county of Bornholm and the five municipalities of the island were merged into one administrative unit named The Region of Bornholm.
There are approx. 41,700 inhabitants, of which 2/3 live in the towns and 1/3 in the rural districts.
Population density is approx. 77 per km2, in Denmark as a whole 121 per km2.
Climate
The Island has temperate coastal climate. Due to the cold waters of the Baltic Sea, the spring reaches Bornholm somewhat later than any other place in the country, whilst the summers last equally longer.
On average, 539 mm of rain falls in Rønne. In Almindingen 712 mm, but on Christiansø only 419 mm. This is due to the fact that Christiansø partly lies in rain shelter of Bornholm and its poor elevation not being able to make the air give off any rain. Correspondingly, the east coast of Bornholm lies sheltered by the high Central-Bornholm, making the annual rainfall less than in any other place in the island and the number of sunshine hours greater.
Svaneke is, as known, the town in Denmark with the most sunshine hours.
Underground
2/3 of the area of Bornholm is granite – the bedrock.
A very clearly marked line of fracture splits the island in a northern highly placed bedrock area and a somewhat flatter south where the granite has sunk and since been covered by younger deposits from the earth’s antiquity and Middle Ages. Especially by Snorrebakken east of Rønne and Klinten south of Aakirkeby (by the experience centre NaturBornholm) this line is very visible in the landscape.
Trade and Industry
Today tourism has become one of the most important industries on the island – only surpassed by farming and succeeded by fishing on the 3rd place.
The Centre for Regional and Tourism Research of Bornholm as well as Destination Bornholm have produced some surveys, showing the results of interviews amongst visitors to the island. The most important aspects for the majority of the tourists are: The scenery and nature, the peaceful atmosphere, peace and harmony, and good walking and cycling paths, local friendliness
