The route starts and ends in the Bison Forest. It is a definite forest route and not particularly hilly, so it can be good to take on a day when it is windy, because there is usually always shelter in the forest.
It is a route through Denmark’s 5th largest forest area, which offers both castle ruins and observation towers – and if you are really lucky, you may even meet the herd of European bison that live in the area. The European bison, also called the Visent, is taller and a little slimmer than its American relative and more peaceful. However, they are still wild animals, so remember to keep your distance and never come between a cow and its calf.
The tour also takes you past bird sanctuaries, wetlands and the Arboretum forest garden.
You can experience the European bison in the beautiful forest, Almindingen. Read more here.
Ølene was protected in 1942 by the state when it was purchased as a wildlife reserve, as the area contains valuable nature. Since then, the protection has meant that animals and plants live and develop exclusively under natural conditions. Read more here.
The castle ruin Gamleborg on Bornholm is located on a difficult-to-access rocky outcrop on the edge of the Ekkodalen valley in Almindingen. Read more here.
