Arnager Harbour

Arnager Harbour is Denmark’s first island harbour, built in 1884. It is connected to the coast via Northern Europe’s longest wooden bridge over seawater, just over 188 m. The bridge was restored from scratch and reopened in October 2019. It is visited by many, both permanent residents and tourists. It is a fantastic installation, built in azobé wood, with two beautiful stairs and a ladder. Here you can fish with a pole, swim all year round and enjoy one of Bornholm’s most beautiful sunsets.

Arnager Harbour is the only harbour on the south coast that keelboats can navigate with a draft of two metres. Guests are welcome in the harbour and can stay on the pier head’s inner side in fine weather. In addition to a small gallery, the small fishing village has a herring smokehouse with a restaurant and a lovely beach.

Our earth our responsibility

In Arnager, you will also find Bornholm’s first climate bench. The characteristic climate bench was developed in collaboration with TV2, who, with the benches, want to call for reflection and action: Our earth, our responsibility.

They have developed elevated versions of the iconic and classic city bench to draw attention to climate change and a future with increased water levels. The benches have been raised by 85 cm to make climate change visible and clear to all Danes.

In Arnager, they have also taken future water level rises into account by raising the new bridge by 75 cm, and they are pleased with the donation from the manufacturer of the climate bench because it illustrates the future climate challenges elegantly.

For those interested in history and geology, the area has exciting experiences

Fossilized footprints from dinosaurs have been found here, and there are remains from mining where phosphorite was extracted during the First World War.

Furthermore, there are remains of the phosphorite shipping facilities to the east of the harbour and of the old harbour, which was constantly sanding, to the west of the harbour. The harbour is well protected behind the shallow Arnager Rev.

The reef stretches far to the southeast and offers plenty of divers experiences. The nautical chart shows the safe entry to the port.
